Figure Ground Processing, Saliency and Guided Attention for Analysis of Large Natural Scenes: Working Towards a Cognitive Saliency Map

Professors Andreas G. Andreou, Ralph Etienne-Cummings and Mounya Elhilali have begun working on a new Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative project.

Spinal Neuroprosthesis Devices and the Control of Artificial Limbs

Prof. Ralph Etienne-Cummings' group is studying the neurophysiology of sensory-motor systems of vertebrate and its application to the development of neuroprosthesis devices for spinal cord injuries and for upper limb replacement.

Smart Surgical Tools Using Fiber Optic Sensor and Imager

Professor Kang and his collaborators have demonstrated an imaging and guided system incorporating microsurgical tools for application in vitreoretinal surgery.

New Image Processing Technique for Human Brain Cortex

Professor Jerry Prince and his group has developed a novel image processing technique based on geometry-driven optical flow warping for spatial normalization of Cortical Surface.

Finger-Friendly ‘Tactile Interface’ Could Aid Blind Computer Users

Professor Jim West and his collaborators are developing a dynamic electronic surface to allow blind or visually impaired people to "feel" mathematical graphs, diagrams and other visuals now displayed on computer screens.

Prof. Jerry Prince has been elected a Fellow of the Medical Image Computing and Computer-Aided Intervention Society

Jerry Prince is the William B. Kouwenhoven Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was selected for his “significant contributions for medical imaging and analysis.”

Prof. Jacob Khurgin has been nominated as a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

At the November 2011 meeting of the Council of American Physical Society, Prof. Jacob Khurgin was elected to Fellowship.  The announcement letter can be accessed here.

Prof. Ralph Etienne-Cummings has been elevated to IEEE Fellow.

At the November 2011 meeting of IEEE Board of Directors, Professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings was elevated to IEEE Fellow "for contributions to neuromorphic sensory-motor circuits and systems."

Mark Foster, ECE Asst. Prof. receives the 2011 DARPA Young Faculty Award

Mark Foster is recognized for his work on SWiPhT: Scalable Ultra-High-BandWidth Photonic Transmultiplexer.  The award will provide funding, mentoring and DoD contacts to allow Dr. Foster to further develop his research.
